Outpatient Withdrawal Management Program FAQ

What is the Outpatient Withdrawal Management Program?

Mountainside’s Outpatient Withdrawal Management (OWM) Program, sometimes referred to as ambulatory detox, offers medically monitored support for individuals experiencing mild to moderate withdrawal symptoms. This outpatient program allows clients to detox safely while continuing to live at home, providing a discreet and flexible alternative to inpatient care.

Who is eligible for the program?

Eligibility is determined through a phone assessment with our clinical and medical teams. This program is best suited for individuals who:

  • Are medically stable
  • Have a safe and supportive home environment
  • Do not require 24-hour supervision
  • Are motivated to engage in treatment
  • Do not have a history of complications during Detox such as seizures, delirium tremens (DTs) or cardiac issues

What substances can be treated through this program?

We support withdrawal management from a variety of substances, including:

  • Alcohol
  • Opioids
  • Stimulants
  • Benzodiazepines (on a case-by-case basis)
  • Other substances, depending on medical evaluation

What services are included in the OWM program?

Clients receive a personalized treatment plan, which includes:

  • Initial medical and clinical assessment
  • Daily check-ins (virtual)
  • Medication-assisted treatment (as appropriate)
  • Symptom monitoring and medical oversight
  • Individual counseling and case management
  • Transition planning to further levels of care
  • Additional support services including but not limited to sober companionship and transportation

How long does the program last?

Program length varies depending on each individual’s needs and the substance(s) involved. Most clients complete the withdrawal management process within 7 to 10 days.

How is OWM different from inpatient detox?

Outpatient withdrawal allows individuals to detox from substances while remaining in their home environment, allowing clients to maintain daily responsibilities. In contrast, inpatient detox provides 24/7 medical supervision in a residential setting. The outpatient model is suitable for individuals with a lower risk of severe withdrawal complications and who cannot leave home for an extended period of time due to obligations such as caring for family or a job.

What happens after withdrawal management is complete?

After withdrawal management clients are transitioned into ongoing care, which may include:

  • Outpatient treatment programs
  • Residential treatment
  • Medication-assisted treatment (MAT)
  • Therapy and support groups

Is OWM covered by insurance?

Many insurance plans do cover outpatient withdrawal services. Our admissions team will verify your benefits and guide you through the process, helping you understand what’s covered and what to expect.

Can I drive while in the outpatient withdrawal program?

It is advised that you do not drive while in the outpatient withdrawal program as some prescribed medications can cause side effects such as drowsiness which make driving unsafe.

Can I work while in the outpatient withdrawal program?

Because withdrawal symptoms and prescribed medications can affect your focus and energy levels, we generally recommend that you take time off from work during the program to focus on your health and recovery.

Can I do Outpatient Withdrawal by myself?

It is recommended that you not go through the withdrawal program alone and will be required that you have a family member or recovery companion (friend or someone of your choosing) with you throughout the process. Mountainside can also offer a sober companion if you do not have anyone that can stay with you.

How can I or someone I care about access the program?

Referrals are not required so individuals may reach out seeking treatment for themselves. To learn more or begin the admissions process, call us at (800) 500-0399 or submit an online request on our contact page to speak with someone on our Admissions team.
