Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

25 hours of structured weekly programming — in person and virtual.

For those who need intensive support without stepping away from their lives entirely, there’s a level of care built for exactly this moment. Mountainside’s Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) provides clinically sophisticated care designed to stabilize early recovery, address the roots of addiction, and help you build a life worth living. Available in person at our Canaan, CT campus and virtually across Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts.

What is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

PHP, sometimes called day treatment, is a structured level of care that sits between residential treatment and standard outpatient programs. Most often, it’s the next step after residential treatment. More structured than traditional outpatient care, with the accountability and clinical depth early recovery often still requires.

Mountainside’s PHP includes 25 hours of weekly programming over a minimum of four weeks. PHP is designed for individuals navigating substance use and co-occurring mental health challenges and serves as a powerful step-down from residential care before transitioning to Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP).

In-Person and Virtual PHP at Mountainside

Mountainside offers PHP in two formats — in person at our Canaan, CT campus and virtually across Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. Both deliver the same clinical depth, the same standard of care, and the same structured programming. The right format depends on where you are and what will set you up best for sustained recovery.

Whether in person or virtual, you’ll receive the support, accountability, and clinical depth needed to:

  • Strengthen early recovery
  • Address trauma and underlying drivers of substance use
  • Improve emotional regulation
  • Build meaningful peer connection
  • Develop relapse prevention skills
  • Create a sustainable recovery plan

In-Person PHP

In-person PHP is offered at Mountainside’s Canaan, CT campus. You’ll work with your clinical team face-to-face, have access to on-site wellness offerings, and benefit from the focus that comes with a dedicated therapeutic environment. On-campus housing is also available for those who need it.

Virtual PHP

Mountainside’s Virtual Partial Hospitalization Program delivers the same 25 hours of weekly programming in a secure virtual format. The same clinical rigor, the same team, without the commute.

What to Expect: A Full Picture of Your Care

Both in-person and virtual PHP follow the same structured weekly schedule, combining individual therapy, clinical groups, family work, psychiatric care, and case management — all coordinated by your treatment team and built around your individual needs.

  • Individual Therapy

Twice-weekly one-on-one sessions with a licensed clinician to identify the underlying drivers of substance use, work through barriers to recovery, and develop your personal treatment goals.

  • Group Therapy

Evidence-based and experiential groups that provide perspective, accountability, and connection with peers navigating similar challenges in early recovery.

    • CBT and DBT Skills Training — practical tools to manage emotions, tolerate distress, and improve relationships.
    • Seeking Safety — a present-focused, trauma-informed model that helps clients establish safety from trauma and substance use.
    • Integrative Healing — somatic and experiential approaches that support early trauma recovery and mind-body healing.
    • Addiction Psychoeducation and Process Group — deepen your understanding of addiction while exploring personal patterns, triggers, and behaviors in real time with clinical guidance.
  • Family Therapy

Recovery doesn’t happen in isolation. We work with your family and support system to strengthen communication, rebuild trust, and begin healing at the systems level.

  • Psychiatric and Medication Services

Comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, ongoing medication management, and medication-assisted treatment when clinically appropriate, all integrated into your care plan.

  • Case Management and Continuing Care Planning

We help you build a clear path forward, connecting you to community resources, continuing care options, and long-term support so the transition out of PHP is a step forward, not a drop-off.
